Custom Linear Stacked Gas Fireplaces at Grand Hyatt

  • Elevated 7 feet above the floor.
  • A viewing area of 26" x 108".
  • A flue running 120', mostly horizontal at 5,700 elevation .
  • Only a 26" gap between the two identical fireplaces stacked on top of each other.
  • Dual pane glass with forced air going between the panes to remove heat.
  • Exposed steel frames finished in a Japanese Brown Patina - a 400 year old recipe which was originally used for painting tea pots.
  • A fire that glows, creating an amazing ambiance within the bar area - we lined the back, sides, and top with porcelain reflective panels. When you are seated at the bar looking up, you can see the flames reflect and glow off the porcelain.

These were the unique, and fairly specific, requests made by the architect and management representative for Grand Hyatt.

Acucraft Fireplace Systems prides itself in receiving unique requests and then being able to create solutions that make the vision possible.  After decades of creating one-of-a-kind fireplaces, Acucraft has determined key ratios that we incorporate into every design, from the very beginning, that help us make your idea attainable.

After receiving the request from Grand Hyatt, Acucraft needed to design a custom, modular system for stacking the fireplaces and attaching them to the concrete behind, for structural support. In addition, there was not enough room to vent vertically, so we designed a flue system that exits the fireplace horizontally, and runs 120'. Many companies are not able to design a fireplace to fit your specifications, but at Acucraft, we specialize in making your requests possible through truly unique, one of a kind, solutions.

The following images are blueprints created by Acucraft after talking with the client, detailing dimensions, the support structure, and the flue system:

The flue exhaust system exits on the left side along with the fireplace controls. The fresh air for combustion and glass cooling enter on the right, along with the heat relief which pulls the heat from the glass and the firebox.

After presenting our ideas to Grand Hyatt, and receiving approval, we began production.

Acucraft was presented with a unique request and was asked by the client if it was possible. With our more than 30 years of experience in the custom fireplace industry, we made it possible.

So, if you have an idea (even if it's just scratched on a napkin) let us know, we would love to make it a reality!

Custom See Through Casino Gas Fireplace

Custom See Through Casino Gas Fireplace

The above sketch (credits to Ann and Ken from Cleo design and Mike from Klai Juba Architects) was the original vision presented to Acucraft for a fireplace in a casino steakhouse patio with a retractable roof.

The key design factors were:

     1.   A viewing area height that would not obstruct the view across the patio.
     2.   The ability to attach a steel cladding enclosure to the panels outside the viewing area.
     3.   Down venting the flue beneath the patio and grade for approximately 50 feet (the retractable roof
           feature made traditional venting impossible).

The animation below, created by Acucraft's design team, was presented to the client.

Below are 3D renderings created by Acucraft designers based on the initial vision of the casino's architects and designers.

4 Sided Gas Fireplace

We recently finished building and testing a very tall 11' high, glass on glass fireplace. The viewing area is 8 feet high and 4 feet wide equally 128 sq. ft. of total viewing are. The fireplace is designed with a base to be installed on the floor and a hood to be installed within the ceiling.  With a total system height of 11 feet, the all-glass surround still gives the fireplace a very elegant look.

Each pane is 8' tall x 4' wide

Notice how the flames are reflected in each pane of glass, and beyond. The height of the glass allows the reflections to extend further than what is typical for an all-glass fireplace.

The tube steel shown in the photos is only being used to support the hood during testing in our facility. When installed, the hood will be secured inside the ceiling and only a 3" steel reveal is view able at the ceiling. Because the hood is secured within the framing above, there is no need for any structural supports between the base and hood, maintaining the clean, unobstructed view.

Drawing prepared by Acucraft.

The ventilation system, designed to exit the hood on the side, can be vented horizontally or vertically.

The square burner is centered within the glass structure and the entire base can be covered with glass media or river rock.

Shown below is a drawing of Acucraft's "Glass Tracking System". Recently developed by an Acucraft designer, the system holds the glass in place and makes it easier to tilt the large glass panes in and out. In addition to ease of installation, the system allows for a very clean look around the base and top.

     4.  Double latching door mechanism

             - Acucraft offers a firescreen option as well

     5.  Fibrex insulated panels
             - A high temp mineral wool insulation that absorbs 1200° F of heat per inch of insulation. We use 4 inches for the top cap.

     6.  Use outside air for combustion
             - With the doors closed, the fireplace use 100% outside air ( not room air )
             - Extremely efficient

     7.  Air wash system
             - Keeps the glass cleaner
             - The air enters near the top of the glass doors traveling across the pane of glass to bottom of the view prior to entering                                       combustion

     8. Bottom and base of sides of the firebox are lined with real fire brick

                                        The Z-Max                                                                 The Hearthroom 36

Each specific fireplace model offers different benefits, so whether you're looking to heat your cabin during the freezing cold winters or provide a focal point without adding much heat—Acucraft likely offers a standard fireplace to fit your needs.

Some of the different options available:

—Smallest viewing area, high heating capacity (The Z-MAX)
             - Perfect if you need a lot of heat but don't want to take up a lot of space.

     — Medium viewing area, medium heating capacity (The Hearthroom 36)
             - A good option if you are not looking for a lot of heat

     — Large viewing area, medium heat capacity (The Hearthroom 44)
             - A great focal point without producing a lot heat

     — Small viewing area, medium heating capacity (The Chalet Series)
               - A small fireplace that still produces quite a bit of heat

     — Medium viewing area, high heating capacity (The Great Room Series)
             - Gives out a lot of heat and offers a substantial view

     — Large viewing area, high heating capacity (The Lodge Series)
             - Our largest standard fireplace

     — We also offer a "High-Tech" version of the Chalet Series and the Great Room Series fireplaces.
             - The viewing area dimensions of the fireplace do not change, but it increases the fireplace's heat output due to the room air                             entering through a 14 tube heat exchanger in the top of the firebox and allows the single fireplace to heat up to 4,000 sq.                               ft. capable of 180,000 BTU's

wood burning fireplace see throughwood burning fireplace see through
Above is a Hearthroom 44 See Through fireplace with rectangular doors.

Every fireplace, other than the Z-MAX, is available with the see through option and rectangular or arched doors. With a see through fireplace, no performance is lost—the fireplace can still heat the same amount of space and the BTU's/Hr remain the same. This option allows direct heat to be transferred to two different rooms or provide a partial break within the same room (as seen in the photos above) and can even be installed as an indoor outdoor system (pictured below). Take a look at our post on Indoor Outdoor See-Through Fireplaces.

Open Gas Fireplace - No Glass

The open gas fireplace is a great option for architects, designers, and home owners who are looking for a unique and modern feel for their fireplace. Having an open gas fireplace provides an extremely open view and allows the fireplace hearth to run all the way to the burner - a very clean look.

There are several different options to choose from when considering an open gas fireplace:
     - Completely Open
     - Suspended Glass
     - Glass on top and bottom, and open in the middle (Split Glass)

Split Glass with Open Front

Blueprints prepared by Acucraft Designers

Acucraft runs a series of calculations to ensure optimal performance, including a flow analysis and a fan power calculation. These tests prove out the design and ensure that the fireplace system will have proper airflow - important when dealing with an open system.

The above video, created by an Acucraft designer, demonstrates how the air is drawn into the fireplace from the room and then pulled out of the fireplace and into the flue by a power fan. Acucraft runs all of the calculations to ensure that this process works properly.

Airflow Diagram (Air Velocity)

Items to consider when selecting an open gas fireplace:

     1.  The need for make-up air to be supplied to the home / envelope
     2.  Exposed flame
     3.  Auto-damper required
     4.  Limited heating value

Safety Features:

When turning the fireplace on, the proven draft system works in conjunction with the power ventilation system to first, turn on the power vent. Then, the PDS, Proven Draft Switch, ensures there is a solid draft. Third, the burner is turned on. Nothing turns on until it is safe to do so, yet the process is seamless and occurs in only seconds.

Once the fireplace has safely turned on, a flame sensor continuously insures that a flame is present. If at any time a flame is not present or the draft is not proven, the system shuts off the gas supply.
