Acucraft's Largest Custom Wood Burning Fireplace - The Hermitage Club

Acucraft Custom Wood Burning Fireplace - The Hermitage Club - West Dover, VT

This custom 4-sided wood burning fireplace Acucraft built for The Hermitage Club's Grand Room is the largest wood burning fireplace Acucraft has ever built; measuring in at over 630 cubic feet (that can fit 140 of our Z-Max fireplaces!) with 75 sq ft of viewing area, this massive fireplace can hold up to 10' logs!

Due to the sheer magnitude of this fireplace, it had to be dropped through the ceiling of the clubhouse using a crane.

The firebox was constructed of 7-gauge steel for a masonry installation and lined with real firebrick.

The custom arched doors are 5' x 5' designed with high temperature ceramic glass and basket handles.

Acucraft Provided Drawing - Class A dual 18" flue system

Due to the sheer size of this fireplace, by cubic feet and door openings, it required custom dual 18" Class A Flues measuring in at over 500 sq inches.

All of Acucraft's wood burning fireplaces are equipped with Combustion Air Ducting. As demonstrated in the image below, outside air (yellow arrows) is pulled down the air intake and dispersed into the fireplace; the air then heats up and the smoke (red arrows) travels up and the flue. This fireplace can be used with all of the doors closed, using outside air, or to be used with one set of doors open or removed.

Acucraft Celebrates 36 Years!

Acucraft Fireplaces - Chalet Series Wood Burning Fireplace

January 30th, 2015 represents Acucraft Fireplaces' 36th Birthday! We pride ourselves on our world class service and being able to cater to our customers' unique projects. We feel truly blessed and fortunate to have a great team of employees working for us who go above and beyond every day for all of our clients; we couldn't do it without all of you!

Acucraft's journey began in the mid-1970's when our founder, Roger Hansen wanted to find a way to heat his home with an efficient wood burning fireplace due to the high costs of heating. Roger took his idea, drew it out on a napkin, and brought it to a local welder in Big Lake, MN for production. What he didn't know at the time was that he was changing the fireplace industry and had created an efficient wood burning fireplace that used 100% outside air for combustion by using a 14 tube heat exchange system that could heat a 4,000 sq ft area, which eventually became our Chalet 20 Series.

In 1979 Roger sold 50 Chalet 20 Series fireplaces. The business was then sold to an engineer, Charles Dahlgrin who wanted to expand the product line. He began selling to masons, trade shows and fireplace deals. He also birthed the Chalet 30 Series and the Chalet 50 Series.

On January 30th, 1997 Chris Maxson took over the business with the intent to dramatically expand Acucraft's product line by working directly with our customers to fulfill their wants and needs. Thanks to our customers we now offer over 20 wood burning fireplaces, custom wood & gas fireplaces, indoor and outdoor fire options, and we have several patents in custom gas and wood burning fireplaces!

Custom Wood Burning Patina Front Options

Acucraft See-Through Wood Burning Fireplace with Japanese Brown Patina Finish

Many of our customers choose a Patina finish for it's rustic antiquity and classic fireplace character. Patina is a process of changing the look of the steel through oxidation with the application of heat; it offers a more textured and weathered look while still providing you with an elegant appearance for your fireplace.

Acucraft offers three different Patina finishes: Japanese Brown, Aged Bronze, and Copper. Our Japanese Brown Patina is the result of a 300 year old recipe used in Japan on cast iron tea pots, and is the most popular Patina finish for Acucraft. The Aged Bronze Patina offers a rich, smooth textured finish, giving your fireplace a more rustic appearance. Last, but certainly not least, is our Copper Patina which provides a more traditional greenish brown finish leaving you with a deep, aged appearance. The tone and depth of your Patina can be adjusted by the number of coats applied.

Acucraft Wood Burning See-Through Fireplace with Aged Bronze Patina Hammered Doors

Patina takes time and our team has worked diligently to perfect the process and deliver quality, aesthetically appealing finishes for all of our fireplaces. Acucraft sends out color samples of our Patina options (at no charge), but no two Patinas are exactly alike...that's part of their beauty and what makes then so unique. Below is a short video which brings to life the Patina process and the craftsmanship involved.

Our team begins preparing the steel by polishing the front of the fireplace to remove any scratches or imperfections. Then it is cleaned, degreased, and wiped down with hot water to ensure a clean surface. The Patina process then begins by heating the steel with a torch to eliminate all of the moisture on the surface, then the Patina solution is sprayed onto the front and heated with a torch; this process is repeated until the desired color has been achieved. Once the steel has cooled it is sealed with a clear coat to stop the oxidization process and lock-in the color.

Acucraft Custom Gas Fireplace Showcase

Since 1979 Acucraft has been the premier manufacturer of gas and wood burning fireplaces.
Our Fireplace Advisors & Designers will work directly with you to make your design a reality.

Acucraft Custom Gas 4-Sided Propane Fireplace
With 25' ceilings this homeowner wanted a show stopping fireplace that would fit in their modern home in Jamestown, ND. Acucraft built this custom 4-sided propane gas fireplace which was clad in stainless steel by the customer to give it a contemporary aesthetic.

Acucraft Linear Propane Gas Burner
Acucraft Linear Burner

The customer came to us with 3 specifics they wanted in a fireplace:
  1. A large propane burner providing a big flame.
  2. Combustion air had to come from the roof (25' up) because the fireplace was placed on a cement slab.
  3. Needed to output heat to accommodate the cold winter weather in North Dakota.

The combustion air intake for this custom propane gas fireplace is located in the roof, brings cold air in from the top, which travels down through four tubes supporting the fireplace and fuels the fire; the gases then travel up and out through the flue.

The video above demonstrates the type of ambiance and flame aesthetic you can
expect from a linear propane burner.

All of our gas fireplaces are tested in-house before being shipped to the customer; to ensure the proper flame is achieved and all the safety checkpoints are functioning properly.

At Acucraft safety is a priority which is why our open gas fireplaces along with our enclosed gas fireplaces with dampers have a series of safety checkpoints to run through before  the fire will successfully ignite. The diagram below illustrates each of the four safety checkpoints:

Acucraft's Sequence of Ignition Safety Steps

Acucraft carefully tests all of our fireplaces to ensure that both the internal and customer requirements have been met, which includes testing the temperature of the glass. In the image below you can see Brian, one of Acucraft's welders, testing the glass temperatures using an infrared gun to ensure the temperature does not exceed 113 degrees F.

Acucraft Custom Gas Fireplace - Glass Cooling System
This fireplace (above) has two air flow systems: Acucraft's Glass Cooling System and Combustion Air. With Acucraft's Glass Cooling System there are two intakes on each side of the fireplace pushing air between the panes of glass which significantly reduces the glass temperature, and the heated air is then dispersed within your home or outside through the heat relief. The combustion air system pulls fresh air in through the combustion air intake to fuel the fire and then exits through the flue.

Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplace

Acucraft's goal is to revolutionize the fireplace industry through excellent customer service, and unique custom solutions with a Collaborative Design Concept (CDC). Working directly with our customers to fully identify the vision and concept while incorporating Acucraft's proven designs to create the absolute best finished product.

This Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplace was designed for a log home being built in Indiana. The customer was looking for a fireplace to be enjoyed in their large great room, and outside on their patio. The design requirements were to obtain a large viewing area with a rustic feel. Additionally, the customer wanted to enjoy a television above the mantel in the great room and outside area.
Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplace
Acucraft was thrilled to receive the opportunity to design this beautiful, one of kind and unique fireplace. With the requirements of the fireplace at hand, the Acucraft design team began to work directly with the customer to go over the options Acucraft has to offer.

Once Acucraft's Design Team and the customer went through the Collaborative Design Process, a design was presented with a viewing area of 46”x 42”. The design needed to include the 22 key ratios for all Acucraft see through fireplace, ensuring the correct flue diameter and length and combustion air inlet options required to fulfill the desired viewing requirements.

Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplace - Indoor View
Acucraft then took the next step to complete the design by presenting to the customer finishing options, which are;
  • Copper Patina, a rich dark textured finish, giving your fireplace a truly vintage appearance.
  • Aged Bronze Patina, a rich, smooth finish, giving your fireplace a truly rustic appearance.
  • Japanese Brown Patina, a 300 year old recipe originally used for Japanese tea pots.
  • Black, a deep matte, black finish giving your fireplace a clean and classic appearance.
Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplace - Outdoor View
The client selected a custom Patina with a wash between a Copper and Aged Bronze finish with custom hammered front and doors with crossover strapping and round head clavos is order to achieve the rustic look.

The Custom Indoor Outdoor See Through Wood Burning Fireplace uses 100% outdoor air for combustion. The room air that is heated comes from below and goes around the fireplace to heat the home. The customer wanted the venting above the mounted television, which is the opening between the stones where the heat comes out. In order to eliminate any cold spots the customer installed ceiling fans to blow the heat downward. In order to have the venting above the television Acucraft installed a Remote Ducting System, which is part of Acucraft’s Whole Home Heating System (please view previous blog to read more about Whole Home Heating System).

Design features of the Custom See Through Wood Burning Indoor Outdoor Fireplaces are:
  • One firebox and one flue
  • Two sets of operating doors; one inside, one outside
  • Ability to load fire wood from the outside; eliminating the need to store or bring wood into your home
  • 100% Sealed Outdoor Door and Frame, eliminating cold air transfer
  • The opportunity to have all heat forced into the home
  • Create a comfortable outdoor fireplace area
  • Ability to have two unique designs; example: Rectangular Indoor, Arched Outdoor, etc
  • Ability to enjoy the fireplace in 2 separate living areas; with only having the maintenance of one fireplace system
  • Security - Lockable Doors
  • The Neo-Ceramic glass panes can support any thermal shock such as cold water on your fireplace door.
  • Lifetime warranty on all Neo-Ceramic glass
